Australian consumer advocacy group CHOICE has named EA one of the finalists for its Shonky Awards for 2013.
The annual awards name and shame the shonkiest products and companies taking advantage of Australian consumers, according to CHOICE. This year they have handed the Shonky Award for “unfair play” to EA for its customer support around the troubled launch of SimCity.
CHOICE stated the reason for the award that after experiencing widespread server problems that made the game unplayable at launch “Australian gamers were even more unhappy when they discovered that the telephone support line was a 1900 number attracting a $2.48 per minute fee.”
CHOICE noted that US customers were not charged for calling the support line.
