Following on from last week’s deeper look into the continued success of Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy, Far Cry 5 and God Of War, this week we wanted to have a look at how 2018 is shaping up as we head into the ‘Christmas release season’.
Drawing again on my ‘data lake’, we compared how individual titles and publishers have performed across both weekly number ones and their inclusion in the weekly Top 10 Charts in both Australia and New Zealand. Here are our hot takes!
Total Entries in the Top 10
We must say this one took us a bit by surprise! From week 1 through 39 there has been 94 titles from 27 publishers feature within the Australian weekly Top 10s and only 75 titles from 18 publishers in New Zealand.
Most number ones by a single title
God of War currently has bragging rights in both Australia and New Zealand claiming six Australian weekly number ones and eight across the ditch.
The next best performers were Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy with four Australian number ones, whilst Crash splits second place with Far Cry 5 with four Kiwi titles each.
Most number ones by a publisher
Sony Interactive Ent. dominates this category as well with 12 out of this year’s 39 weekly numbers ones in both Australia and New Zealand.
In Australia Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, God Of War, Detroit: Become Human and Spider-Man all hit number one, whilst Horizon Zero Dawn, God Of War and Spider-Man were number one in New Zealand.
With Crash’s and COD’s success this year Activision has seven 2018 number ones in Australia followed by Capcom with five.
Over in New Zealand Actvision boasts eight 2018 numbers ones with EA just behind with seven.
Most consecutive weeks at number one
Unsurprisingly it is God Of War again in both Australia and New Zealand. It claimed five weeks straight in Australia (Weeks 16 through 20) and did one better in NZ (Weeks 16 through 21).
Most titles in the Charts this year
Nintendo (Australia) and Sony Interactive Ent. and Electronic Arts (New Zealand) have seen 12 individual titles appear in their respective charts so far this year.
Microsoft (11 titles) and Sony Interactive Ent. (10) were close behind in Australia with Nintendo (9) the next best in New Zealand.
Total weeks in the charts for all titles by a publisher
Added together Nintendo had a combined total of 85 spots (Australia) and Sony Interactive had 82 spots (New Zealand). With a total of 390 spots so far this year, this saw the publishers hold 21.79% and 21.02% of the positions respectively.
Most weeks in the charts by a single title
Staggeringly, Rock Star Games’ Grand Theft Auto V has appeared in 32 out of 39 Weekly Top 10s this year in both Australia and New Zealand. A massive effort given it originally released way back in September 2013.
Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 held pace in Australia with 31 appearances, with Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy the next best finisher in New Zealand with 26 appearances.
Most consecutive Weeks in the Top 10
Last but not least, its Sony’s God of War yet again! It featured in the Australian charts for sixteen straight weeks (Week 16 through 32) and has been in the New Zealand Top for a massive 24 straight weeks (Week 16 through 39), never leaving the Top 10 since its release.
