Dementia Australia develops app for A Better Visit

Dementia Australia has collaborated with Swinburne University of Technology’s Future Self and Design Living Lab to develop an app for families and people with dementia to interact and have a ‘Better Visit’.

The app, named ‘A Better Visit‘, includes activities and games for families and people with dementia to engage and interact, especially when it can be difficult when a family member no longer recognises them.

Stephanie Bendixsen, who lost her mum earlier this year to Alzheimer’s disease, has praised the app in a video on Facebook, saying “I really wish something like this had been around when I was visiting my Mum.”

Studies have shown that some video games (like Super Mario 64) can improve short-term memory in older adult brains, and the beauty of apps like ‘A Better Visit’ is that they engage conversation between people with dementia and their families and encourage a positive experience during what can often be a trying time for families.
