Amy has turned her love of games into a career and embodies everything that makes our industry so great.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication in 2010 from Massey University, Wellington.
Having worked in both agency and in-house design teams for a few years, she realised she craved the independence of freelance work, and founded her own creative studio, HelloMissPotter, in 2009. In early 2014 she became a full-time freelance Creative Director.
Learning the word ‘entrepreneur’ in late 2014, Amy co-founded Leaping Tiger and has considered herself a Creative Entrepreneur ever since. Now working full-time as Chief Operating Officer of Leaping Tiger, she finds herself wearing many hats—most often lead UX designer and product manager. Leaping Tiger now has a team of six amazing people in their office in Wellington, New Zealand.
Speaking of the companies creation, Amy told MCV Pacific, “Leaping Tiger was born out of our personal struggle to build meaningful friendships with other gamers in the age of faceless online multiplayer. It brings together my love of community, social media and design – and I consider myself extremely fortunate to be doing something I’m so passionate about, every single day.”
Since founding Leaping Tiger and hosting the Hot Chips Gaming YouTube channel with friends, Amy has been a member of startup and tech panels, and continues to speak about design and startup life at local meetups. Additionally, she is writing blogs whenever she can, including recent articles for The Spinoff.
When we spoke with Amy, she shared her thoughts on the importance of women in the interactive industry. Potter said, “It’s so important that we have strong, confident women in our lives, and in all our media. I am continually learning from the many inspirational women in my life, and I consider it my mission to ensure the next generation sees the term ‘gamer girl’ as peculiar and outdated.”
