MCV Pacific Women In Games: Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie

The transplanted Canadian Kiwi, Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie has made a name and a home for herself in the Australian Games Industry.

Raynes-Goldie is the Founder and Creative Director of Games We Play and the inaugural Director of the Games and Interactive Program at FTI in Perth. Kate also serves as an Adjunct Research Fellow at Curtin University’s School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts.

Each facet of Kate’s work revolves around interactive media and games, whether creating, producing or educating, specialties include; creating phygital, experimental games and playful experiences as well as supporting the the work of women and other under-represented groups in the games industry.

Kate established and now runs FTI’s Games and Interactive program, the first and only of its kind in Western Australia.

The program supports the work of WA game developers, providing business advice, advocacy, events, training and a soon to be announced grant program which will provide the only funding available to WA game developers at both state and federal levels.

The program also includes the highly successful Playup Perth, a monthly event where developers and gamers come together to playtest game prototypes and celebrate the work of local developers.

From the ground up, Kate has designed the program to be inclusive and supportive to women and other under-represented groups and is active in its outreach to these groups to increase their numbers. Currently, Perth’s games industry has 15% women, which is 5% higher than the national average.

Kate is active in local, national and international groups which support women in games and technology, including Geek Feminism, WiDGET, WITWA and has spoken on the subject at Microsoft, ACS, the Perth Games Festival and Edge of the Web.

Kate continues to advocate for women by speaking to numerous young women in Australia and Canada about careers in the games industry. She also runs a list for women involved in change-making or working in industries where they are under-represent

Kate’s passion to these groups is nigh on, awe inspiring and it is has been with her since a young age. Kate tells MCV Pacific, “When I was around ten year old,I used to write letters to Nintendo asking them to have more women in their ads.”

At Games We Play and Atmosphere Industries before that, Kate creates award-winning phygital and mixed platform games for education, community engagement and social change, that are pure and simple fun at their core.

Some highlights of her portfolio include leading the development of:

  • The world’s first story-focused educational escape room for the State Library of Western Australia.
  • A digitally augmented board game for kids with the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
  • A pervasive street game that was played in cities around the world
  • A Twitter-based conference game for Edge of the Web in 2008.
  • and Perth’s first ever Alternate Reality Game, Ghost Town in 2007.

Kate’s work has been featured at Indiecade (San Francisco), Come Out and Play (New York), the National Theatre (London), Playpublik (Berlin), Fresh Air (Melbourne) and the TIFF Sprockets (Toronto). In addition, Kate is a sought after advisor and speaker, including Media 140, the Perth International Arts Festival, TEDxPerth, SXSWi, Freeplay, and PAX Australia. She has also appeared in ELLE, The Globe and Mail, La Presse and the ABC, CBC, NPR and MTV (twice!)

Kate holds a PhD in Internet Studies from Curtin University, serving as a researcher and teacher at the university level, both online and in the classroom, for several years. Her experience includes lecturing in Internet Studies at Curtin University, Open Universities Australia and at CFC Media Lab for the Interactive Art and Entertainment Program in Canada, of which she is also a graduate. She also holds a BA (hons) from the University of Toronto in Semiotics and Philosophy.

Currently, Kate is working on an augmented card game with Weerianna Street Media in the Pilbara to help Ngarluma kids learn more about their culture.
