QUT is taking their esports program even further, after announcing it will award five $10,000 scholarships for League of Legends players in 2019.
Offered under the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships program in the elite athlete category, the scholarships will go to five students selected to represent the university in the Legends Oceanic Challenger Series.
QUT has already made waves as Australia’s first official university-endorsed esports program, along with a dedicated on-campus gaming arena.
Michael Trotter, QUT eSports co-coordinator, says that the scholarships require applicants to “battle it out” in a two-step process, “The first step is to get an application in by November 16 for a 2019 QUT Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for Elite Athletes… Those applicants will then battle it out on January 5 at the selection trials at our new QUT eSports Arena for a place on our five-member 2019 OCS team.”
QUT’s esports program is showing results with the QUT Tigers finishing eighth from 14 teams in their debut OCS season.
