SEGA publishing office closes, MacBeth forms new company

Following on from the news that Sega has revisited its European model and closed its territory offices, Australia goes in a new direction.

Darren MacBeth, former Managing Director of Sega Australia and prior to that Ubisoft Australia, has set up Five Star Games, a company which will be handling the distribution, sales, marketing and PR of Sega titles in Australia and New Zealand moving forward.

MCV has understands that Sega Studios Australia in Brisbane will not be affected by the Sega restructure, and that it’s business as usual on the development front.

A press release from Sega says of Five Star: “Five Star is focused exclusively on selling, marketing and distributing premium quality video games in the Australian market.”

Sega was hit with a European restructure overnight, which sees the business remove its territory specific publishing offices. Other third parties are being used in European countries.

Jurgen Post, COO of Sega Europe, said: “SEGA is entering a new and exciting phase that will position the company as a content led organisation maximising sales with strong and balanced IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise.”

“The company will benefit from a clear focus and realigned strategy for our digital business and packaged goods and we are confident that this will lead to a successful future.”

Post told MCV the move was ‘painful’, but ‘logical’ for Sega.
