Ubisoft has today confirmed a whole mess o’ fan love for its upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
There are a lot of them, so here’s the rundown:
- The Black Chest Edition: comes with artbook, soundtrack, steelbook case, lithographs and canvas prints, all DLC ever, a 55cm diorama of Kenway on the Jackdaw, a parchment world map and an actual black flag. This one’s the limited edition only from Uplay.
- The Buccaneer Edition (EB Games exclusive): artbook, soundtrack, lithographs, Kenway figurine on the Jackdaw and a collector’s edition box.
- The Skull Edition (non exclusive): artbook, soundtrack, lithographs and a collector’s box.
- The Special Edition (non exclusive): exclusive DLC at launch, regular price.
These are just the EMEA collector’s edition as well, Ubisoft isn’t holding back.
Then there’s The Watch, a ‘VIP Program’ for Assassin’s Creed fans.
EB Games, JB Hifi, UPlay and Mighty Ape will be distributing a treasure map (limited in stock) which will allow access to The Watch.
The Watch will contain an exclusive quest for members only which will reveal additional information, bonus content and more for hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans.
Oh, and just for good measure, a standalone figurine of Kenway is coming this October, which features the hero atop some Mayan ruins.
One has to hand it to Ubisoft – it’s pulling out all the stops to give the fans exactly what they want. These are true collector’s editions, so it’d seem Ubisoft is quite keen to really keep those avid fans onboard (so to speak) for what is now the series’ sixth major home console outing.
The turn of a console generation is a pivotal point for a standing franchise, given the propensity for new big-budget series’ to emerge at the beginning of a new hardware cycle, so it could be that this big push is designed to keep Assassin’s Creed’s best-selling status as we push into the PS4 generation.
While it’s at it, Ubisoft has also released a gameplay trailer for the game which is vastly more comprehensive than their usual teaser fare this early on in the hype cycle.
